Bangalore, August 2: Karnataka is giving five tmcft. of water to Tamil Nadu as a ‘gesture of goodwill’ to save the kuruvai crop in Thanjavur delta.The decision was taken this morning by the Chief Minister, Mr. D. Deveraj Urs, in response to a request from Tamil Nadu.The Karnataka authorities started releasing water in the afternoon. The water is expected to reach Mettur Dam in the next two days.A spokesman of the Karnataka Government said that water was being released purely as a gesture of goodwill in spite of Karnataka’s own difficulties. He pointed out that the situation in South Karnataka was bad and the standing crop, particularly sugarcane crop in the Krishnarajasagar ayacut, had suffered badly because of lack of water. The State Government was experiencing difficulty in providing adequate water to save the standing crop. The rainfall so far had been the lowest Karnataka had received in recent years.Madras, August 2: The decision of the Karnataka Government to release five tmc feet of water from Krishnarajasagar has been welcomed by Tamil Nadu officials who were worried over the fast depleting storage in Mettur where the inflow has reached a mere 10 cusecs this morning.They are happy that Karnataka has come to Tamil Nadu’s rescue at this moment when water is urgently required for Kuruvai cultivation in Thanjavur district.
