Vast tracts of areca plantations flooded following heavy rains in parts of Tirthahalli taluk on Saturday night.

Many parts of the Malnad received heavy rains on Sunday, disrupting normal life. There were reports of landslips and flooding in many places and the rivers are in spate in the region.The rivers in the region have swollen leaving the people on the banks in fear. Tirthahalli taluk administration has shifted the families located on the Tunga bank in the town to a temporary care centre at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan in the town. Many areca plantations have been flooded.The Malnad region received an average of 100 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m on Sunday against the normal of 39 mm, registering 159% of departure from normal. Hassan district received 38 mm of rainfall against the normal of 17 mm. The highest of 224 mm was recorded at Hongadahalla in Sakaleshpur taluk. Chikkamagaluru district reported 105 mm against the normal of 38 mm and the highest of 295 mm was recorded at Shanuvalli in Koppa taluk. Shivamogga district received 136 mm of rainfall against the normal of 50 mm on the day and the highest of 274.2 mm was at Nagara in Hosangara taluk.The crest gates of Tunga dam at Gajanur near Shivamogga have been opened to release the excess water. As of Sunday, the outflow was 72,460 cusecs and the inflow was 67,171 cusecs. The inflow to Bhadra reservoir at Lakkavalli in Tarikere taluk has been increasing due to the heavy rains in the catchment area. As of Sunday, the water level stood at 2,132.25 ft against the full reservoir level of 2,158 ft. The gross storage was 43.15 tmcft against the gross capacity of 71.54 tmcft.The inflow to Linganmakki hydel reservoir was 77,580 cusecs and the gross storage was 57.84 tmcft against the gross capacity of 151.75 tmcft. The water level stood at 1,781.85 ft against the full reservoir level of 1,819.12 ft.At Hemavathi reservoir at Goruru in Hassan taluk, the inflow was 11,884 cusecs and the water level stood at 2,910.37 ft against the full reservoir level of 2,922 ft.
