At least three have been killed and 21 injured after a homemade bomb exploded near a restaurant in central Moscow on Saturday evening, state media reported.

The explosion took place around 8pm local time (5pm GMT) on Kudrinksaya Square in the city centre.

An unidentified woman carrying an “improvised explosive device” attempted to enter the Italian restaurant Balzi Rossi but was stopped by a security guard, the National Anti-Terrorist Committee has said.

The restaurant, located in one of Moscow’s renowned Stalin-era skyscrapers, had been closed for a private event.
