A strong earthquake has rattled the East Coast this evening.
The preliminary magnitude 5.7 quake struck 10km south of Te Araroa at a depth of 39km, GeoNet said.
More than 3000 people reported feeling the quake shortly after 8.35pm. GeoNet classified the shaking as strong.
A magnitude 3.0 aftershock followed

More than 17,500 people reported feeling the shaking nationwide.
The tremor was felt by hundreds of people across the east coast of the North Island
The jolt hit at 3.23pm, about 35km north-west of Te Anau.
