The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has welcomed FIFA's decision to abandon its controversial proposal to sell a stake in its commercial competitions, including the FIFA World Cup, to private investors, declaring the move a victory for global football.
Meanwhile, UEFA accused FIFA President Gianni Infantino of betraying the trust of national football associations through what it described as a secretive and opaque scheme that undermined transparency and confidence in the sport's governing body.
In a statement, UEFA said the proposal had been unanimously rejected by its national associations, as well as by numerous football federations and confederations around the world, arguing that the plan threatened the integrity of the sport.
"The proposal was unanimously rejected by UEFA’s national associations and by many other federations and confederations of all sizes around the world, whose job it is to protect football," UEFA said.
