Ella Onojuvwevwo has expressed delight at winning Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s 400m since 1994, after claiming bronze at the Glasgow 2026 Games on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Nigerian quarter-miler produced a determined run to finish third in a season’s best of 51.00 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium, becoming the first Nigerian woman since Fatima Yusuf to medal in the event at the Games.
Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley won gold in 50.21 seconds, while Barbados’ Sada Williams edged Onojuvwevwo to silver by just one-hundredth of a second, finishing in 50.99 seconds.
Speaking after the race, Onojuvwevwo said the achievement meant a great deal to her given how long Nigeria had waited for a medal in the event.
