The 180-dunam campus combines elite facilities, sports medicine, hospitality and public space as Eilat targets teams and major events
For decades, Eilat has been known primarily as Israel’s leading resort city, drawing visitors with its beaches, sunshine and year-round tourism. The first phase already includes three regulation-size soccer fields, among them a FIFA-standard synthetic pitch and a dedicated high-performance training field. The facilities are supported by a professional team center equipped with locker rooms, treatment rooms, classrooms, meeting areas and media facilities, providing clubs and national teams with an environment designed to meet international standards.A central element of the complex is its advanced Sports Medicine Center, which includes physiotherapy and rehabilitation rooms, a physiology laboratory, ice baths, saunas and a fully equipped performance gym.The center was designed to provide athletes with a complete training, treatment, recovery and performance environment in a single location. According to Gendler, CEO of V5 Architects, the project was envisioned as far more than a collection of athletic facilities. “The vision was to create an integrated destination that brings together elite sports, tourism, community use and urban development within a single master plan,” he said.The next phase is expected to expand the campus with a 4,000-seat multipurpose arena, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a therapeutic pool, tennis courts and additional training facilities. Its warm winters allow professional teams to train year-round, even when severe weather disrupts activity across much of Europe.Together with Ilan & Asaf Ramon Airport, the city’s extensive hotel infrastructure and the expanding sports campus, those conditions are helping position Eilat as an attractive base for international clubs, national teams and major sporting events.The complex has already hosted several leading Israeli soccer clubs, as well as international delegations including Ghana’s under-21 national team. Its role extends beyond elite competition, with national tournaments, community sporting events and educational programs also held on the campus.During the Iron Swords war, it served as an activity center for children and teenagers evacuated from communities in northern and southern Israel, demonstrating the flexibility and civic value built into the complex’s design.Developed by the Eilat Municipality as a long-term investment in the city, the project represents an effort to connect architecture, sports, tourism and public funding within a single urban strategy. Its wider significance lies in an architectural philosophy that treats sports facilities as more than isolated venues. In this model, sports architecture can shape neighborhoods, stimulate local economies, support community life and improve residents’ quality of life.As construction advances, the Eilat International Sports Complex is expected not only to alter the city’s physical landscape but also to test whether Israel’s best-known resort destination can build a second identity as an international center for sports training and competition.
