San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will have surgery on his right knee and be placed on season-ending injured reserve, general manager John Lynch said Saturday.Pearsall, who turns 26 in September, missed eight games in 2025 with a PCL injury in the same knee. The 49ers already made a move to help replace Pearsall, reuniting with former star receiver Deebo Samuel, who spent his first six years with San Francisco before being traded to the Washington Commanders last offseason. Lynch said Samuel would participate in Saturday’s practice.Lynch said the timetable for a return from PCL surgery is six to 12 months and that the sweet spot might be nine months. He said Pearsall would have the procedure “in the next couple of weeks.”These 49ers players are off to a slow start at training campMatt Barrows and Vic TafurA first-round pick in 2024, Pearsall has appeared in only 20 games through two seasons. He missed six games as a rookie after being shot during an attempted robbery in August 2024. He finished that season with 31 catches for 400 yards and three touchdowns.Last year, he overcame a summer hamstring injury to put up 327 yards on 20 catches in his first four games before sustaining the knee injury. Pearsall came back to play five games before missing the wild-card playoff game in Philadelphia because of knee and ankle injuries.Coach Kyle Shanahan remained very high on Pearsall and was excited about an offense that would have newcomer Mike Evans, George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey setting up the shifty Pearsall to beat defensive backs one-on-one.Now Samuel will factor into that equation, and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling should get a bump, especially with veteran Christian Kirk already missing practices with a calf injury.Quarterback Brock Purdy has been impressed with Stribling’s absorption of the playbook and the depth of his routes, as well as his first step.“He’s done a good job with the footwork and getting off the line,” Purdy said. “But the other half of football is up top — using your hands as a receiver and trying to create separation, obviously legally. But that’s a part of (being a receiver) — using your strength against a DB.“He’s proving to all of us that he’s reliable and we can trust him.”The 49ers have already been hit hard with injuries again this season. In addition to Pearsall and Kirk, running back Jordan James is out with a rib fracture, and safety Malik Mustapha went down with a hamstring strain. Swing tackle Vederian Lowe (ankle) and rookie defensive lineman Gracen Halton (bruised knee bone) also hit the trainer’s room during the first practice of training camp and haven’t returned to the field yet.
