Chelsea have completed the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion on a two-year deal.The veteran forward was under contract with Brighton until next summer but the south-coast club agreed to let him join Chelsea for an undisclosed fee.The 35-year-old is now set to travel to Hong Kong to join up with the rest of the squad on the west London club’s pre-season tour.“I’m really honoured to come to a club of this stature at what feels like a really exciting time,” Welbeck said upon the move being finalised on Saturday.“I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.”

— Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) August 1, 2026The Athletic reported on July 27 that Chelsea were exploring a move to sign Welbeck, with his qualities as a leader and a striker appealing to new manager Xabi Alonso.He scored a career-high 13 Premier League goals last season as Brighton finished eighth and qualified for the Conference League.After targeting players under the age of 25 in recent windows, Chelsea have pivoted to pursuing experience this summer. They are also working on a deal to sign Jordan Henderson, 35, following his release from Brentford, having attempted to sign Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka (33) in early July and showing interest in John Stones (32) following his exit from Manchester City as a free agent. Stones has subsequently joined Italian club Inter.
