Germany's lesser-known islands offer exactly what many people are looking for today: less hustle and bustle, more nature and authentic experiences. Whether it's the Wadden Sea on the North Sea coast, a Baltic Sea beach or quiet countryside, for a short break it is often the smaller islands that provide the greatest relaxation.
Hiddensee: Baltic Sea island made for slowing down
Hiddensee in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania may no longer be a real insider tip among island lovers, but it is still far less well known to many travellers than Rügen or Usedom. The island in the Baltic Sea is only about 17 kilometres long, car-free and best explored by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage or on foot.
The long sandy beaches, dune landscapes and the Dornbusch in the north with its lighthouse are particularly appealing.
