KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad, has performed a robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement on a 37-year-old man from Rajahmundry who was suffering from severe mitral stenosis caused by chronic rheumatic heart disease.Mitral stenosis is a condition in which the mitral valve, located between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart, becomes narrowed, restricting the flow of blood between the two chambers. In this case, the narrowing was attributed to chronic rheumatic heart disease. If severe and left untreated, the condition can place increasing strain on the heart and lead to complications.Dr. Nisarga, Chief Cardiothoracic, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgeon, said the patient, an accountant working with a prawn export company, underwent the procedure on July 23. The surgery lasted for more than five hours.“The robotic approach allowed the surgical team to replace the damaged valve through small incisions instead of the conventional sternotomy, in which the breastbone is divided to access the heart,” he added.
