A summary of the eThekwini Municipality debt collection report for the month ended June 2026.
eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba urged councillors to encourage communities to pay for municipal services after the debt rose to R47 billion in June 2026.
Addressing the council on Thursday, Xaba said it is the responsibility of all ward councillors to speak Masakhane “We build together” whenever they conduct public meetings.
The debt collection report for June 2026 outlined that water accounts made up 42% of the total debt, while property rates and electricity accounted for 22% and 14%, respectively. Household debt accumulated to R35 billion, contributing 75% of the total debtors, while government departments owe eThekwini R1.8 billion.
Fifty councillors owe R3.1 million, while 3,373 municipal employees owe R73 million. Xaba said the municipality was paying Eskom for electricity and uMngeni-uThukela Water for water.
