Rochelle Wijesingha was 10 when her family moved to Canada from Sri Lanka in 1995, settling first in Flemingdon Park before putting down roots in Scarborough. Growing up, education always came first.

She went on to earn three university degrees — including a PhD from McMaster — but the path to motherhood was anything but straightforward. She was expected to marry and start a family by her late 20s, and her mother would bring her photos and proposals of “suitable guys” recommended from here and back home.
