LOS ANGELES — One day after his angry outburst aimed at Willson Contreras and third-base coach Chad Epperson, Jarren Duran was back in the Boston Red Sox’s lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers.Interim manager Chad Tracy said he did not consider benching Duran, who yelled in frustration toward Contreras and Epperson on Thursday night in Sacramento in a 5-4 win over the Athletics.“He’s a good player and I want him in there,” Tracy said before Friday’s game in Los Angeles. “You cannot ignore what he’s capable of doing.”Though the big hits have often been elusive for Duran this season, he gave the Red Sox an important 1-0 lead in the second inning against the Dodgers and later drove in another run as the Red Sox capped their dominant month of July with a 9-4 come-from-behind victory over the Dodgers, the best team in baseball. The lone worry on the night was Contreras exiting in the third after being hit by a pitch in the helmet. He’s undergoing concussion protocols and will be reevaluated on Saturday.Why is everyone watching for hugs before the trade deadline?Tyler Kepner and Lauren Morales-JonesStill, Thursday’s drama was swept aside Friday as the Red Sox rolled past L.A.“I think it’s fairly clear at this point we got a resilient group,” said Tracy, whose club posted a major-league best 21-4 record in July.In what could have been a scenario that drove a wedge into a surging Red Sox team, Tracy calmed the waters of the Duran dustup from the day before, suggesting the outburst on Thursday was merely a blip on the radar of a long season. Not much can stop this club right now — even Duran’s public displays of frustration.“Those two (Duran and Contreras) are in a great place, the group is in great spirits,” Tracy said. “Everything is in a really good spot, and there’s more to that than maybe what’s getting put out there, which I won’t discuss. We’ll keep it internal.“There’s things in a 162-game season — this is like our family,” he added. “That’s how we view it, and during the course of that, there’s going to be different things that happen. In our line of work, some of that stuff gets put on TV and it gets blown up, but it’s not even close to as big of an issue as it’s being made (to be).”In the sixth inning of a tie game on Thursday in Sacramento against the Athletics, Duran hit a flyout to shallow left with Contreras at third base. Contreras started to break for home but put on the brakes and retreated to the bag. Duran, visibly frustrated, angrily threw up his hands and shouted several times toward Contreras and Epperson. After the game, Tracy, Contreras and Duran all downplayed the incident, but it represented a jarring scene.Duran has struggled in the past to keep his emotions in check against heckling fans, but until Thursday had never publicly lashed out at a teammate or coach.Duran and Contreras shared lockers next to each other in the visitors’ clubhouse at Dodger Stadium on Friday, and any tension seemed to have dissipated.“We’ve got a really tight-knit group,” said Brayan Bello, who pitched four scoreless innings in relief on Friday.Duran has shown blips of his former MVP-caliber play during a terrible season in which he’s batting .198 with a .593 OPS. After going 7-for-21 with six RBIs in six home games last week, Duran had a tough series in Sacramento (along with Boston’s offense as a whole), going 2-for-15. He finished Friday 2-for-4 with two RBIs.Duran has often berated himself for his play this season, and that was the case on Thursday. Tracy suggested there’s more going on but didn’t want to elaborate.“I’ll keep all that stuff internal,” Tracy said. “But more than anything, he’s hard on himself. Jarren expects a lot out of himself. He’s a really good baseball player that’s having a rough go of it this year. But for me, it’s reminding him the amount of things he’s done on a major-league baseball field in a major-league uniform that so many people that are playing on that field with him can say, ‘Man, I’d kill to do some of the things that guy’s done.’ That’s how good I think he is.”Duran has been a key piece of the clubhouse over the past three seasons, openly sharing his mental health struggles, including in a Netflix documentary about the team.He put himself on the map in 2024, when he was named All-Star Game MVP and posted 8.7 bWAR, but followed that up last season by hitting .256 with a .774 OPS in 157 games. This year, his struggles have reached new depths. And yet, Tracy has stuck with him.“You can’t ignore the level of defense that he plays,” Tracy said. “You can’t ignore that he can bunt against lefties. He can get a safety squeeze down. He can sac bunt. He can steal a base. Sometimes it’s very easy just to look at a batting average. And I’m well aware of (where he ranks among) qualified hitters and all this stuff. But you can’t ignore that he’s hitting .280 with runners in scoring position.”Nevertheless, Duran’s name has been in trade rumors each of the past two years. And while his struggles this season likely make him less of a trade target, it’s not out of the question he could be included in a package for another player ahead of Monday’s deadline.In the days leading up to the trade deadline, Tracy said Breslow has kept him looped in on the moves they’re considering.“We’ve talked quite a bit,” Tracy said. “I’m not going to give any specifics, but certainly I’ve talked quite a bit about various things.”Whether any of those move talks have included Duran remains to be seen, but whatever the Red Sox are planning, beating the Dodgers on Friday only furthered their resolve to add whatever they can to keep this magical run going.
