If you want to know what the Democratic Socialists of America’s mass-amnesty and open-borders policies would look like in practice, just look at what is happening right now in Spain, where Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, head of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, has implemented their vision.Tens of thousands of military-aged men invaded the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco on Thursday, swimming around the breakwaters that separate Europe from one of its few land borders with Africa. The migrants spent the night breaking into homes, looting stores, and clashing with Spanish authorities.“The situation is absolute chaos,” a Ceuta Civil Guard officer said.
“We are in a situation of total humanitarian and social emergency,” Ceuta President Juan Jesus Vivas told a Spanish radio station.Despite Vivas’s calls for an emergency declaration, the socialist Sanchez declined, claiming that Spanish civil-protection law does not recognize migration flows as a threat to national security warranting such a declaration.As the situation continued to spiral out of control, Sanchez finally allowed the military to reinforce the Civil Guard. Platoons were sent to help secure the land border, while diving teams patrolled the waters.The immediate cause of the migrant invasion appears to be a recent Spanish Supreme Court decision preventing migrants who reach Spanish soil by sea from being summarily returned to their home countries. Instead, such migrants are now allowed to apply for asylum, which, as in the United States, can take years before an initial decision is reached and even longer before appeals are exhausted. In the meantime, migrants with pending asylum cases are given work permits after six months. Close to 50% of asylum-seekers in Spain are granted at least some form of “humanitarian” protection.Since the ruling, the number of swimmers reaching Ceuta had steadily increased, reaching 1,500 in the week before Thursday’s onslaught. Three migrants died trying to reach Ceuta on Wednesday alone.The court ruling was not the only signal potential migrants received. In January, Sanchez announced an extraordinary amnesty program. All illegal immigrants who had been in the country for at least five months and had no criminal record in Spain would be given a one-year residence permit, the right to travel and work anywhere in the country, and the ability to transition into one of Spain’s ordinary immigration-status categories.Sanchez’s government had estimated that 500,000 migrants would qualify. More than 1 million have applied.Defending his amnesty plan this January, Sanchez said, “Some say we’ve gone too far. But I would like to ask you: When did recognizing rights become something radical? When did empathy become something exceptional?”“Spain is, above all, a welcoming country,” Sanchez continued. “And this is the path we choose: dignity, community, and justice.”But where was this “dignity, community, and justice” for the citizens of Ceuta as mobs of migrants invaded and looted their homes?THE THIRD WORLDIFICATION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTYThe socialists of Spain, New York City, and the Democratic Party are wrong. Migrants have no right to enter Europe or the United States. In the backward logic of socialists, we owe migrants the right to come here because our capitalist policies supposedly destroyed their countries’ economies. But the exact opposite is true. It is the socialist policies of Third World countries that condemned their own people to misery.Now, socialists in Europe and the United States want to import that misery here. Ceuta is therefore more than a Spanish crisis. It is a warning to Americans about what happens when governments transform border enforcement from a sovereign obligation into an exercise in ideological guilt. President Joe Biden let 8 million of them in. Another Democratic president would let in far more.
