According to a statement issued on Friday by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Captain Kennedy Anyanwu, the troops launched an immediate pursuit of the kidnappers after the incident was reported at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
The Nigerian Army has rescued 14 kidnap victims abducted along the Lagos–Benin Expressway in Edo State following coordinated operations by troops of the 4 Brigade under the 2 Division participating in Operation WABAIZIGAN.
The army said the rescue mission, carried out over two days, followed a swift response by troops after receiving credible intelligence on the abduction along the busy highway in the Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.

The statement noted that the soldiers, who were on routine patrol when they received the intelligence, swiftly moved along the kidnappers' escape route, forcing the criminals to abandon most of their captives.
