A cloudburst in Kishtwar's Chhatroo area damaged several shops and commercial establishments early Saturday (Photo credit: X/Shagun Parihar)JAMMU: A cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district early Saturday damaged several shops and commercial establishments.The cloudburst occurred in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar in the early hours of Saturday, news agency ANI reported.No casualties have been reported so far, Union minister Jitendra Singh said.Singh said he spoke to Kishtwar deputy commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma after receiving information about the incident."Just now spoke to DC Kishtwar Pankaj Kumar Sharma, after receiving the reports of cloudburst in the Chhatroo area early this morning. No loss of life reported. Some commercial outlets/shops are damaged for which due compensation will be provided," Singh said in a post on X.Early warning systems in placeSingh said measures had been taken to strengthen the region's early warning capabilities following the cloudburst in Chasoti last year.The Union ministry of earth sciences has installed two latest Early Warning Systems (EWS) in Kishtwar and Machhail, while an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) is also being installed in the Padder area, he said.Earlier cloudburst damaged Rajouri roadThe latest cloudburst comes days after heavy rain and a cloudburst in Rajouri district on July 19 triggered massive landslides and severely damaged the Thannamandi-DKG-Bufliaz Road.Flash floods washed away several stretches of the newly constructed road, along with culverts and large trees between Thannamandi and Bufliaz.The road, an important Border Roads Organisation (BRO) project connecting Rajouri and Poonch with the Kashmir Valley, has remained closed for 13 days. Traffic has been diverted through the BG (Bimber Gali) route.Meanwhile, BJP Kishtwar MLA Shagun Parihar expressed concern over the damage caused by the cloudburst and urged the administration to ensure immediate relief and restore road connectivity.In a post on X, Parihar said she was "deeply saddened" by the cloudburst in Chatroo, which caused significant damage to vehicles and property.She prayed for the safety of those affected and urged the administration and concerned authorities to take immediate steps for relief and restoration of connectivity."May the situation normalize soon, and may everyone remain safe," she said.Amarnath Yatra suspended amid rainMeanwhile, the Amarnath Yatra was suspended from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on Saturday as the 250-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the second consecutive day.No fresh batch of pilgrims was allowed to leave Jammu for the Kashmir Valley as repair work continued on the Ladha-Samroli stretch in Udhampur district, news agency PTI reported.Both carriageways of NH-44, the key road link between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley, were closed on Friday shortly after the Amarnath Yatra convoy passed through the route.The closure followed damage caused by rain last week, while fresh spells of rain have further disrupted repair work, leaving parts of the road slushy, muddy and slippery.Light to moderate rainfall was reported in parts of Ramban and Udhampur districts.Registration counters shiftedAmid a decline in the number of pilgrims arriving in Jammu, the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board shifted Yatra registration and token distribution counters from the Tawi Riverfront to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp.The Tawi Riverfront facility had been used for offline registration, token distribution, e-KYC verification and RFID issuance.Since the Yatra began on July 3, around 4.5 lakh devotees have visited the cave shrine in south Kashmir, officials said.The pilgrimage is scheduled to conclude on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.(With agency inputs)
