Sir, - On reading “‘Studying in Ireland was the hope I was holding on to’: Palestinian teacher ‘dying inside’ since visa refused,” (July 28th), I was struck by the number of students Haneen’s issues mirror. In working in the Students’ Union at Trinity College Dublin, I know of at least 80 students stuck in limbo, barely a month before they are meant to start at various Irish institutions. The Government cannot expect Palestinian students to provide transcripts from educational institutions that have been levelled by Israeli scholasticide, no more than they can expect financial histories from Palestinian banks that have been forced into collapse. The restrictions in the visa system are fundamentally incompatible with the supporting of Palestinian access to education, and must be done away with in the name of compassion, humanity and academic freedom.There is no time for these students to submit appeals, no postal system for them to even send them with.
