Assam chief minister Himanta Principal secretary (information technology) KS Gopinath Narayan Sarma said that Assam has come up with first GPU cluster, creating secure, government-owned AI infrastructure that will power the next generation of public services.Sarma stated in X ,"My vision is to build an AI-First Assam, where Artificial Intelligence becomes a force multiplier for better governance. We have now commissioned our first GPU cluster, creating secure, government-owned AI infrastructure that will power the next generation of public services."Principal secretary (information technology) KS Gopinath Narayan stated in X,"Our first L40S 8-node GPU cluster landed in the state data center hardly two weeks ago. Then we got our GPUs up and running and we got open source models covering two critical AI applications and three applications in all. Two running on AI capability and a third leveraging the AI power. So Assam begins his journey on becoming an AI-first state."He added that and our very first step was through a sovereign compute. We get our office file, notings, etc. and we want to refer to some important notifications or some act or rule. We ask the question within the AI assistant, within the office, and it goes to our source trace, get back the answer and powers the response of the office. He said ,"So we have two applications using AI and they work with each other and on this within one month. So I believe Assam is on the road. Our Honourable Chief Minister has given us the guidance, make Assam the AI first state and that's what we aspire to do. And this is only our very first step. It's only the very beginning now. We've got a long way to go and we will continue marching."
Assam launches its first GPU cluster to power government-owned AI infrastructure
Assam has launched its first government-owned GPU cluster for AI. This secure infrastructure will power the next generation of public services. The state aims to become an AI-first region, enhancing governance capabilities. Office files and notifications will now be accessible through an AI assistant. This initiative marks a significant first step in Assam's technological advancement.
Assam deploys first sovereign AI infrastructure via L40S 8-node GPU cluster; two government applications (policy search, decision support) now operational. State-owned compute model sidesteps BigTech dependency and exemplifies emerging-market approach to data autonomy and compliance-driven AI governance.
