Burning the Green Deal during Europe's wildfire crisis might not be as mad as it appears
With swathes of France and Spain on fire, letting industry pollute for longer seems ludicrous. But on closer inspection, long-term strategic adjustment is sorely needed.
July saw the arrival of two supposedly linked events that appear in juxtaposition: Brussels proposed pushing back the net-zero target for industry and the power sector from 2039 to 2048, and much of the bloc went up in flames that were exacerbated by climate change.
Taken together, it would seem that the Commission’s decision to scale back the industry’s emissions neutrality target is to turn the wheel in the wrong direction.
After all, isn’t climate change the main driver of these increasingly ferocious blazes?
