​Sports Desk, July 31 (EFE).- FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Friday that the organization is abandoning its plans to create a subsidiary to market the World Cup. ​»Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,» states the communiqué from the president of the soccer governing body. ​On Wednesday, FIFA announced its intention to sell 20% of FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), the new subsidiary it sought to create to manage the organization’s commercial operations and events, such as the World Cup, its flagship product. ​In an explanatory note published on its website, FIFA stated that the new subsidiary was valued at approximately 20 billion dollars, according to J.P. Morgan. According to the document, the FFE’s main proposed investor group was to be Thrive Eternal, an American venture capital firm founded by Joshua Kushner, brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared. ​Infantino had offered all 211 member associations 40 million dollars if they backed the proposal for private investment in its tournaments, including the men’s and women’s World Cups. ​The member associations had a 50-day deadline to indicate whether they would accept the proposal. ​The proposal suffered a setback on Thursday after being rejected by UEFA’s 55 members, including the winners of 13 World Cups since 1930, which warned that its national federations would not participate in FIFA competitions if the proposal were to stand. ​The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) joined UEFA’s stance, making it unlikely that Infantino could get the 106 member votes needed to pass the proposal.
