The 1860 Indentured Labourers Monument in Verulam was vandalised this week, prompting an outcry from community leaders and cultural advocates who stressed the importance of commemorating South Africa’s diverse heritage.
The monument, which stands as a tribute to the thousands of Indian indentured labourers who arrived in South Africa in 1860, was discovered with extensive damage.
Terraforce bricks were hurled into the fenced area surrounding the monument, damaging the pedestal on which it stood. Additionally, the locked gate was broken, and litter was scattered across the area.
Anand Jayrajh, the president of the foundation, who played a crucial role in conceptualising and establishing the monument several years ago, described the act as “deeply disrespectful” to the memory of those whose sacrifice laid the foundations of KwaZulu-Natal’s cultural and economic landscape.
