Chennai port has achieved an all-time record by handling 46,000 tonnes of barytes exports in a single day through the vessel Nafisa Jahan at Jawahar Dock-II. This achievement surpassed the previous record of 45,200 tonnes handled through Ghousta at Jawahar Dock-IV on May 31, 2022. The new benchmark reflects the port’s enhanced operational capability, seamless planning and close coordination among all stakeholders involved in cargo handling, according to a release.The port also handled 13,208 tonnes of pig iron, a new cargo commodity, through the vessel Agia Charis at Jawahar Dock-IV on the same day. The shipment availed the benefits of the Non-Containerised Cargo Concession Scheme (NCCS) 2026-27, an initiative of Chennai Port Authority that offers wharfage concessions of up to 80 per cent along with Loyalty Bonus Incentives for eligible customers.Strengthening the port’s cargo handling infrastructure, Sachin S Kurve, Chairperson, Chennai Port Authority (ChPA), inaugurated the operations of three Harbour Mobile Cranes (HMCs) deployed by B.L. Transport, the release said.Kurve said the milestones reflect Chennai port’s continuous pursuit of operational excellence, infrastructure modernisation and customer-focused initiatives.Published on July 31, 2026
