Supreme Federal Court Justice André Mendonça authorized the opening of an investigation into businessman Fábio Luís Lula da Silva, known as Lulinha and the son of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, over alleged corruption and influence-peddling offenses.The Federal Police investigation focuses on alleged attempts to obtain authorization from the Health Ministry to market medical cannabis. Lulinha is involved in the business alongside Roberta Luchsinger and lobbyist Antonio Carlos Camilo Antunes, known as Careca do INSS.
Investigators suspect that influence peddling may have taken place within the Health Ministry and the presidential office.
Lula said he will not use his office to protect his son and that, if he is found guilty, he will have to pay "the same price everyone pays when they make a mistake."
Lulinha's lawyers denied any wrongdoing. Roberta Luchsinger's defense called the case politically motivated, while Antunes' legal team declined to comment on the allegations.
