Spanish authorities are working with their Moroccan counterparts to return migrants in the 'shortest time possible'
MADRID – The arrival of thousands of migrants from Morocco in Ceuta constitutes a serious violation of Spain’s territorial integrity, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said upon his arrival in the Spanish exclave on Friday.
The Interior Ministry said 50,000 people had entered the city by Friday, while more than 35,500 had already returned to Morocco. Local authorities put the total number of arrivals at 60,000.
“Ceuta is a Spanish city. What happened deserves all our reproach and condemnation in the strongest possible terms,” Sánchez told reporters. He blamed human trafficking networks for the worst migrant crisis Spain has seen in recent history.
According to local reports, the number of deaths recorded as of late Friday afternoon stands at 41.
