The Hyderabad Police has registered cases against technology firm Meta’s India head, and several Facebook and Instagram accounts over purportedly objectionable videos and photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared on the two social media platforms during the youth protests, The Indian Express reported on Friday.The first information reports were registered on Wednesday based on complaints by Bharatiya Janata Party supporters. The police in Congress-ruled Telangana have invoked provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.One of the complainants, T Saikiran Goud, a member of the Telangana BJP’s social media core committee, alleged that about 20 Facebook and Instagram accounts had posted morphed content about the prime minister, The Times of India reported.“On behalf of Telangana BJP [workers], we seek an investigation into certain Instagram accounts that have been publishing and circulating content which…is derogatory towards the prime minister,” the newspaper quoted Goud as alleging in his complaint. “[The content] appear[s] to promote narratives that may be prejudicial to the sovereignty, integrity and public order of the nation.”Goud also sought action against Meta for hosting the content. Meta is the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.Another BJP supporter alleged that several Instagram accounts had shared “obscene” videos and images, The Indian Express reported.“I came across multiple morphed and digitally manipulated videos and images depicting the prime minister, [United States President Donald Trump] and former Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan in an obscene, derogatory and misleading manner,” the newspaper quoted the complaint as saying. “Such content has the potential to mislead the public.”All links cited in the complaints had become inactive by Thursday, The Times of India reported.The content was posted online during the youth protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign to demand the resignation of Pradhan, the Union education minister at the time, over the alleged irregularities in the conduct of competitive exams.On July 20, thousands joined the protest in Delhi two days after the police forcibly took activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for three weeks, to hospital. Their march to Parliament was met with a crackdown by the police. Dozens were injured as the police used lathis, fired tear gas shells and pellet gun against the demonstrators.The police action turbocharged the agitation, which spread to other parts of the country.Delhi Police’s FIR against XThe FIR in Hyderabad came two days after the Delhi Police registered a case against X for allegedly objectionable and defamatory posts about Modi on the social media platform.An FIR was registered at the Special Cell’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit under charges of criminal intimidation, public mischief and defamation.The police had also written to X seeking that the “derogatory, malicious and defamatory content” about “constitutional heads” be removed from the platform.It had asked the social media platform to provide details of the account from which the content was posted, including the holder’s name, address, contact details and email ID. The police also asked for login and logout details along with date and time stamps.It further directed the platform to preserve details related to the posts or videos for future investigation and provide a certificate under Section 63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
