Sixteen Indians were killed during the war in West Asia, the Union government informed Parliament on Thursday. Ten of those who died were seafarers.Eight of the deaths were reported in Oman, four in the United Arab Emirates, two in Kuwait, and one each in Saudi Arabia and Iraq, the Ministry of External Affairs said.On June 15, the US and Iran arrived at an interim agreement to stop the fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz for commercial vessels. They also held talks in Switzerland aimed at reaching a final peace deal within two months.However, on July 9, the US military launched fresh attacks on Iran hours after President Donald Trump said that the ceasefire was “over”. This came after Tehran’s alleged attacks on commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has been retaliating by striking sites in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.On Thursday, the ministry also told Parliament that 75 Indians were injured during the conflict. Of these, 32 were injured in the United Arab Emirates, 24 in Oman, 13 in Kuwait, four in Qatar, and one each in Saudi Arabia and Israel.It added that in “all cases involving war-zone incidents, under Directorate General of Maritime Administration Welfare Scheme, an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh is provided”.The ministry said that seafarers covered under collective bargaining agreements with their respective unions were also eligible for “additional war-zone compensation”.Officers covered by the Maritime Union of India would receive Rs 12 lakh, while crew members covered by the National Union of Seafarers of India would receive Rs 10 lakh.In a separate accident, not related to the conflict, 12 Indians lost their lives in an explosion at Ras Laffan Gas Facility in Qatar amid the conflict in June, the ministry added.
