Africa has for some time been a key focus of the Trump administration's efforts to counter China's growing global influence, as Washington plans more than $340 million for projects in Africa and other regions.

Africa's large supply of critical minerals remains a vital aspect of this competition, which both powers need for defense, electronics, clean energy and emerging technologies.
