Silva has earned 20 Portugal caps Gualter Fatia via Getty ImagesJuly 31, 2026 Updated 7:48 am EDTBournemouth are working on a deal worth around €30million (£25.6m; $34.5m) to sign Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva.The 22-year-old defender, who has one year remaining on his Benfica contract, is set to undergo a medical this weekend before completing a move to the Premier League side.Silva will bring European pedigree to Bournemouth (having made 29 Champions League appearances and played six Europa League games) as well as a winning mentality, as shown by the four first-team trophies he won with Benfica in addition to winning the Nations League with Portugal in 2025.The defender progressed through the Benfica youth system before breaking into the first team in 2022. He has made 181 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals.Silva featured 41 times across all competitions last season under Jose Mourinho as Benfica finished third in the Primeira Liga.He has been capped 20 times by Portugal since his debut in 2022. He was part of the nation’s squad at the 2022 World Cup and 2024 European Championship, but missed out on a place at this summer’s tournament.As detailed by The Athletic in 2023, Silva admires former Benfica defender Ruben Dias, now of Manchester City.“I look up to Ruben a lot,” Dias told CNN during the summer before he broke into the first team. “He started playing here and look at all the things that he achieved at Manchester City, and also in the team at Benfica. It’s important for me to have my references to reach the top.”Centre-back Marcos Senesi departed Bournemouth this summer following the conclusion of his contract and joined Tottenham Hotspur.Should the deal be completed, Silva will become Bournemouth’s second signing of the summer following striker Alvaro Rodriguez, who joined from Elche earlier this month.
