Zelensky says Ukraine ‘not losing’ The latest figure differs from the estimate Zelensky gave in a February 2026 interview with French television, when he said about 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed on the battlefield since the start of the full-scale invasion. Zelensky also claimed Russia had suffered approximately 1.6 million military casualties since February 2022, including about 700,000 troops killed. Asked whether Ukraine was currently winning the war, Zelensky said the country was “not losing” and argued that Russia no longer held the initiative. For Ukraine, victory means preserving the country and its independence, he said, adding that Russian forces were not achieving victory on the battlefield.
