Greece recorded a further decline in fatal road accidents during the first half of 2026, with traffic deaths falling 11.6% from a year earlier, officials said Thursday, citing stricter enforcement, improved infrastructure and greater compliance with road safety rules.
A total of 213 people were killed on Greek roads between January and June, down from 249 during the same period in 2025 and 313 in the first half of 2019, Alternate Minister for Transport Giorgos Kotsiras said at a news conference.
Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis said police carried out 1.57 million alcohol breath tests nationwide in the first six months of the year, more than double the 750,000 conducted during the same period last year.
Authorities recorded 13,613 positive tests, down from about 16,000 a year earlier.
Officials also highlighted the expanded use of AI-powered traffic cameras that detect speeding, red-light violations, mobile phone use and failure to wear seat belts.
