Hamas has accepted a roadmap for the phased disarmament of its armed wing and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, according to the group, US President Donald Trump and representatives of the Peace Council overseeing the ceasefire process.
Trump announced late on July 30 that an agreement had been reached for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza, describing it as a major step toward the establishment of a new Palestinian administration in the territory.
Senior Hamas officials confirmed that the movement had accepted the plan, which is intended to advance the next phase of the ceasefire agreement in place since October. The question of Hamas’s weapons had remained one of the main obstacles to further progress.
Under the roadmap, the National Committee for the Governance of Gaza, created by the Peace Council, would supervise the storage and decommissioning of weapons. Hamas said the process would not be controlled by Israel.
“Israel will not interfere in the issue of disarmament. The National Committee is the body that will carry out this task,” Hamas negotiator Ghazi Hamad said.
