The governor appealed to members of the peace committee to intervene, warning that the state was moving dangerously towards what he described as genocide.
The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Thursday lamented that there is an "active progression towards genocide" in the state ahead of the August 15 governorship election, accusing the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and the police of unleashing sustained violence, intimidation and politically motivated arrests against his supporters.
Speaking at a Peace Summit convened ahead of the governorship poll, Adeleke claimed that his administration, members of his political party and residents of the state had been under siege for the past three months, warning that the situation could deteriorate further unless urgent intervention is taken.
Addressing participants at the summit, the governor said he attended the meeting despite contemplating a boycott because of what he described as the violence that had engulfed the state.
"I should have boycotted this peace meeting because of the violence unleashed on Osun State in the last few months, on the directive of Gboyega Oyetola. However, my presence is due to my very deep respect for our peace leaders here present," Adeleke said.
