Questions arise over Cape Town's CCTV cameras.
As Cape Town prepares for local government elections, the focus on crime and safety has been reignited, with the City’s expansive closed-circuit television (CCTV) programme coming under scrutiny by critics and crime fighters who question its location, operations, and costs.
With another tender for CCTVs recently published, the City in turn said investment in crime-fighting technology was not the problem, but a lack of convictions linked to gangsterism, violent crime, extortion, and the sale of narcotics.
This week, former City councillor and ex-Mayco member, Grant Pascoe, questioned the millions spent on public safety programmes such as CCTV installations and how many were operational and offline.
The City confirmed that between 90 and 95 percent of cameras were operational.
