State-owned NHAI on Thursday said it has launched a nationwide initiative for the development of world-class public toilet facilities at the toll plazas in a step towards enhancing commuter convenience and improving toilet facilities along the National Highway network.NHAI, in a statement, said the initiative envisages to enhance sanitation blocks at the toll plazas through an innovative performance-based contracts framework, ensuring high standards of cleanliness, functionality and long-term maintenance.Under this initiative, NHAI will undertake renovation of existing toilet blocks as well as create new facilities to introduce standardised, indigenously developed designs that combine robust structural features with sustainable and green building infrastructure.The enhanced sanitation facilities will provide clean, safe and accessible public amenities while ensuring uniform quality standards across the National Highway network, it said.To ensure sustained service quality, NHAI said it has adopted a technology-driven maintenance framework under which the facilities will be operated and maintained.The operational model integrates Internet of Things (IoT) based live telemetry systems for real-time monitoring of maintenance parameters, enabling proactive upkeep and efficient service delivery, it said.Published on July 31, 2026
