Τhe wildfire on the island of Crete, in which two firefighters lost their lives Wednesday, was still burning Thursday evening, aided by high winds in the area.
The high winds also make it impossible for firefighting planes and helicopters to operate. The winds in Crete reached up to 125 kilometers (78 miles) per hour Wednesday and only slightly weakened Thursday.
The fire on the island of Paros reignited Thursday and was active by sundown.
More fires, seven in total, were still active across Greece, the Fire Service announced Thursday afternoon, adding that 30 more that had erupted in the previous 24 hours were either extinguished or under control.
