Tokyo, July 31 (Jiji Press)--Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average briefly soared over 3,400 points to top the 65,000 line on Friday morning, buoyed by overnight gains in U.S. technology stocks. At 10:22 a.m., the index of 225 major issues listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Prime section stood at 65,364.73, up 3,497.30 points, or 5.62 pct, from Thursday's closing. Reflecting the previous day's strength in U.S. high-tech names, buying in Tokyo was also concentrated in semiconductor- and artificial intelligence-related issues, including chipmaking equipment maker Advantest and other heavyweight Nikkei components. The market was also supported by stock index futures buying from short-term players, market sources said. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
