The Nigerian Medical Association, Ogun State chapter, has raised fresh concerns over the acute shortage of medical doctors in the state, revealing that only about 1,200 doctors are currently serving an estimated population of nine million people.
The association said the figure translates to a doctor-to-population ratio of about one doctor to 7,500 residents.
It, however, lamented that despite the severe manpower shortage, the few doctors who have chosen to remain in the country rather than emigrate are increasingly subjected to unwarranted attacks by members of the public and, in some cases, security agencies.
The state chairman of the association, Dr Luqman Ogunjimi, disclosed this on Thursday in Abeokuta during a press conference to herald the 2026 NMA Week and Annual General Meeting, themed “Protecting Healthcare Providers: Addressing Violence Against Doctors and Strengthening a Safe Healthcare System.”
Ogunjimi said although many Nigerian doctors had emigrated in search of better opportunities, those who chose to remain deserved improved welfare and greater government support.
