The dark prince of reality TV has re-emerged. Mike Darnell has inked an exclusive, multi-year overall deal with Netflix, where he will also consult on the platform’s unscripted slate. He’ll work closely with Netflix nonfiction series & sports vice president Brandon Riegg, who was instrumental in recruiting Darnell to the streamer.

According to insiders, Darnell will be tasked to “provide strategic creative guidance across the unscripted slate, collaborate with the team on creative development and shape new ideas across the portfolio.”

Darnell had previously spent a decade at Warner Bros. Television Group before leaving in 2023, a move he decided to make after a restructuring would have altered his role at the company.

Darnell joined Warner Bros. in 2013 after a legendary 18-year run at Fox, where his reputation was cemented as the reality kingpin behind TV phenomenon “American Idol,” as well as juicy TV favorites like “Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire” and “Temptation Island,” as well as in-your-face fare including “Joe Millionaire,” “Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction,” “The Swan,” “When Animals Attack” and “Man vs. Beast.” (At Fox he also helped shepherd animated hits “Family Guy” and “Futurama.”)
