July 30 (UPI) -- UNESCO added 25 World Heritage sites during its annual committee meeting in Busan, South Korea, this week, with Brazil's Amazonia Theaters becoming Latin America's only new addition.
It joins a regional collection that includes some of the world's most recognizable cultural and natural landmarks.
The World Heritage Committee inscribed 19 cultural sites, five natural sites and one mixed site, bringing UNESCO's World Heritage List to 1,273 properties across 173 countries.
Brazil's newly recognized property consists of two historic theater complexes built during the Amazon rubber boom between 1879 and 1912: Theatro da Paz and Praça da República in Belém, and Teatro Amazonas and Largo de São Sebastião in Manaus.
According to UNESCO, the landmarks reflect the economic prosperity of the period while blending European architectural influences with decorative elements inspired by the Amazon rainforest.
