BJP MP Anurag Thakur has submitted a notice of breach of privilege and contempt of the House to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his remarks during the discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (July 29, 2026).Parliament Monsoon Session Day 9 LIVEThe notice was submitted for “use of unparliamentary and derogatory language and levelling grave and unsubstantiated allegations” against Home Minister Amit Shah.In the three-page notice, Mr. Thakur requested Mr. Birla to refer this matter to the Privilege Committee for a detailed enquiry and appropriate action, including a direction to Mr. Gandhi to tender an unconditional apology to the House and to Mr. Shah.Referring to the proceedings of the House on July 29, 2026 during the debate on the anti-paper leak Bill, Mr. Thakur said Mr. Gandhi violated Rule 352 while narrating a purported conversation with the protesting students.Mr. Gandhi had alleged that Mr. Shah had authorised police excesses against student protesters and that the RSS had “captured” the education system, triggering a massive uproar in the Lok Sabha.The Union Government on July 27, 2026, introduced the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, in Lok Sabha, in a bid to curb exam paper leaks in the country, ensuring stricter action against organised units involved in the criminal act. The Bill, seeking to amend the two-year old existing law, comes closely after student protests across the country. ‘The primary purpose of the Bill is to strengthen the existing anti-cheating law, curb exam malpractices, ensure time-bound investigations and trials, and establish enhanced deterrence against organised crime groups and institutions to safeguard transparent, merit-based selections.(With PTI inputs) Published - July 30, 2026 08:48 pm IST
