In my most recent “Strategist Brain,” I talked about wanting to replace the Birkenstock Bostons I’d been living in with a few upgraded but equally easy-to-wear pairs. I was seven months pregnant at the time, and even disregarding my swollen feet, my Bostons were the only shoes I owned that I could put on hands-free and without bending down and that didn’t make me feel like I’d completely given up. I dreamt of a postpartum wardrobe that made me feel as polished as I did pre-pregnancy (if not more so) and also accounted for the fact that I’d be toting around an infant and chasing after a 5-year-old. My new shoes needed to make me look like I got dressed with purpose, instead of by default, but also be low- to no-lift to wear. The Birkenstocks definitely did the latter; for the former, I would need to shop around.
