Inquest into apartheid activist Booi Mantyi's 1985 death to begin in August.

An inquest into the death of anti-apartheid activist and former President of the De Aar Residents' Association, Booi Mantyi, is set to begin in De Aar next week as part of ongoing efforts to investigate unresolved apartheid-era cases.

The proceedings will commence on August 3, 2026, at the De Aar City Hall in the Northern Cape and will be heard over two sessions, running from 3 to 7 August and from 11 to 14 August 2026.

The inquest forms part of the National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) broader programme to revisit cases identified by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) that were never fully resolved during the democratic transition.

The matter follows case management proceedings held before the Judge President of the Northern Cape High Court in Kimberley on January 19, 2026, during which the persons of interest appeared before the court. It was confirmed that the Office of the State Attorney will represent all identified individuals during the inquest.
