UMUAHIA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, the late General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, describing him as a symbol of patriotism, courage, discipline and selfless service to the nation.

The President’s message was delivered by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), during the 60th memorial celebration of the late General held in Umuahia, Abia State, on July 29, 2026.

Representing the President, the Defence Minister said Aguiyi-Ironsi distinguished himself as an exceptional military officer whose career was marked by loyalty, professionalism and commitment to national duty.

“General Aguiyi-Ironsi rose through the ranks to become the first Nigerian General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army and subsequently Nigeria’s first Military Head of State during one of the most critical periods in our national history,” Tinubu said.
