These include Ben Needham, Joanna Yeates, Ben Field, Mahek Bukhari, Jane Andrews, and serial killer Peter Tobin.Peter Tobin: A Monster In Their Midst is the fourth episode in the series and covers the 1991 disappearance of teenagers Vicky Hamilton and Dinah McNicol, who vanished without a trace within a few months of each other in different parts of the UK.15 years later, the murder of 23-year-old Angelika Kluk in Glasgow revealed a link between all three cases. The show examines the exhaustive hunt to find the killer and how updated DNA technology was used to track the perpetrator, Peter Tobin, down.What did Peter Tobin do?Angelika was working as a cleaner at a church in Glasgow when she vanished on 24 September, 2006. The church handyman, Pat McLaughlin, came under suspicion, but he later vanished after being interviewed by police.When McLaughlin's picture was published by the media, the police received a phone call from someone who recognised 'Pat', and revealed the man had been using a false identity. He was actually convicted sex offender Peter Tobin.When the church was searched, Angelika's body was concealed beneath the floor on September, 29 2006. Tobin was 60 at the time, and the crime was so horrific that detectives were convinced he must have killed before.Strathclyde police launched Operation Anagram, a nationwide scoping exercise to determine whether Tobin could be linked to unsolved cases across the UK.In the Disney+ documentary, forensic scientist Carol Rogers from the Scottish Police Authority discusses the link between Angelika and Tobin, drawing on compelling forensic evidence.She said, "We had DNA and semen on the jeans that matched Peter Tobin, so we had links between Peter Tobin and Angelika Kluk's body, but we had to establish where she had been assaulted and murdered."The police then moved their investigation to a garage workshop where Angelika had last been seen alive. Initially, there didn't appear to be any obvious evidence inside, but officers soon made a discovery.Rogers explains: "There was so obvious blood, but then we started to look at the floor, my colleague noticed what looked like a small blood spot, and then we started seeing more."We carried out DNA profiling on those blood stains and it matched a profile of Angelika. At that point, we are confident that is where the assault took place."On 10 February 1991, 15-year-old Vicky Hamilton went missing on her way to her home in Redding, Falkirk. The Anagram team realised that at the time she disappeared, Tobin was living just over a mile away in Bathgate.Anagram also linked Tobin's 1991 whereabouts to the area where 18-year-old Dinah McNicol went missing after hitchhiking home from a music festival.He was in his 40s when he killed Vicky and Dinah. Both bodies were later found buried in the garden of a former Kent home Tobin lived in at the time of their disappearances.What happened to Peter Tobin?Tobin was convicted of the murder of all three women and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of release.He was formally charged with the murder of Angelika Kluk on 7 October, 2006, and in May 2007, he was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years in prison.‌In July 2007, Tobin was convicted of Vicky Hamilton's murder and handed a life sentence with an order to serve at least 30 years.In 2009, Tobin was already serving life when he was convicted of murdering Dinah McNicol and sentenced to a full life term.‌He died at the age of 76 on 8 October 2022, following a fall in his cell at HMP Edinburgh. According to BBC News, Tobin was suffering from dementia, vascular disease, and prostate cancer and had contracted pneumonia.With his life drawing to a close, police once again attempted to get him to reveal information about other potential victims.
