The funeral of 25-year-old firefighter Pantelis Diamantakis, who died together with 58-year-old Manolis Stratidakis battling a huge wildfire in Crete's region of Rethymno, was held Thursday.

Relatives, friends, colleagues and members of the public gathered at the church of Agios Nektarios at Fourfouras for the service.

The archbishop of Crete, Eugenios, praised the two firefighters who he said sacrificed their lives Wednesday to save others.

"These ... are hours of silence, contemplation and prayer for our people who died in this untimely way," he said.

"[The dead firefighters] gave all they had in the effort to save lives, property, our country.
