The surge in AI development has set off one of the biggest infrastructure expansions seen in recent years. McKinsey estimates that global investment in data centres could reach US$7tn by 2030.
Yet the systems behind AI carry a substantial energy burden. Research from the IEA suggests data centres used around 1.5% of global electricity in 2024.
It also projects that demand could double to 945TWh by 2030. That would surpass Japan’s current total electricity consumption, despite the country having a population of more than 120 million.
Against that backdrop, NTT DATA and ENGIE have announced a strategic partnership aimed at improving decarbonisation, energy resilience and sustainability across NTT DATA’s global data centre estate.
As pressure grows on data centre operators to cut carbon, the deal combines ENGIE’s experience in renewable energy and low-carbon solutions with NTT DATA’s infrastructure and technology capabilities.
