Australian eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman ⁠Grant, mentioned in a statement that the content remained accessible even after Telegram had been put on notice long ago (Photo: AP).Australia reported beginning legal action against messaging platform Telegram on Thursday amid its alleged failure to tackle pro-terror posts linked to terrorist executions and mass shootings.According to a court filing by Australia’s online safety regulator, eSafety, ‌Australian Telegram ⁠users complained to the platform after seeing 12 posts containing pro-terror content from July to October 2025, including three containing known terrorist content. However, as per the filing, the platform failed to take down 10 of the posts and suspend/block the accounts publishing the content.E-safety commissioner Julie Inman ⁠Grant mentioned in a statement that the content remained accessible even after Telegram had been put on notice long ago."This case concerns content linked to some of the most notorious acts of known extremist violence in recent history, including material associated with the Christchurch and Buffalo terror attacks", she said.Additionally, her statement mentioned civil penalties up to A$54.6 million ($38 million) upon failure to comply with the Australian codes and standards.Speaking to Reuters, a spokesperson appointed by Telegram rejected these allegations, seeking to contest them in court. As per the spokesperson, Telegram's anti-terrorism efforts are well-documented, with the platform blocking thousands of extremist communities in 2026 alone.Telegram was founded in August 2013 by two brothers, Pavel Durov and Nikolai Durov, in Russia, who had to leave their country in 2014 and establish the company’s base in Dubai. Today, it is one of the world's most downloaded apps, with over 1 billion monthly active users, as per the company.
