Larsen & Toubro Electronic Products & Systems (LTEPS) has said that it will provide the whole ecosystem for mobility solutions in-house – from semiconductor chips to data centers – as the advanced technologies like Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications are being used in the automobiles today.The company is building the Mobility business around a single ambition, engineering the future of green, safe and connected mobility from India to the world with a capital outlay of close to ₹5,000 crore over the next five years and jobs to around 5,000 people.The investment will also go to world class manufacturing lines at Coimbatore for electronics systems, components and electric vehicle (EV) traction motors, alongside two research and development (R&D) centres in Bengaluru and Coimbatore dedicated to indigenously designing electrification, safety and connectivity products.“In terms of the ecosystem of L&T, we have got L&T semiconductor and we have also got chip for motor which is connectivity and control, and a chip for the Wi-Fi for two-wheeler and three-wheeler application, and that is providing sovereignty from the chip to the Wi-Fi device. So, we believe this is an important priority for L&T,” Prashant Jain, Managing Director, L&T Vyoma, and Head – Electronic Products & Systems, said to a query by businessline.Talking about data on cloud, he said there is a lot of data that all these vehicles are now receiving and storing currently with different formats and different applications and different mobile and therefore there is a need for standardisation too.“In my mind, there is a requirement to standardise to an Indian standard. At this point the country does not have a credible Indian player providing scale and alternatives for the government to make it as one standard. And, that is what our aim, to provide that one credible standard for India, and it has to be sovereign. It cannot be penetrated by or held by a technology player outside India,” Jain noted.He said there are several vulnerability points starting from the energy meters to the to the vehicles and to the solar inverters. All these are connected devices, and that is the platform that L&T wants to build to provide a sovereign/ secure platform eventually across the electronic portfolio and the company was working on across electronics and semiconductor to solve that problem.Talking about the EV business, Sudeepth Puthumana - Head, Mobility Business, LTEPS said that the EV traction motor, developed in technology partnership with EVR Motors, covers a wide voltage range of 48 to 800 volts across an 8 to 200 kilowatt architecture, with roughly 98 per cent component localisation and close to 70 per cent indigenous value by cost.“LTEPS has already secured its first commercial order of five-lakh traction motors for a two-wheeler customer, with series production beginning at the Coimbatore facility from next month, alongside active discussions with passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle customers,” he said.In terms of V2V and V2X (vehicle to any infrastructure), Puthumana said the company was developing 5G based solutions for connected systems and will be compliant to any cybersecurity and functional safety, and also other regulatory requirements.Published on July 30, 2026
