The names and telephone numbers of thousands of government officials and school and university staff have been stolen by hackers after a breach of the Department for Education.
Some 607,000 records were stolen in the attack, including full names, job titles and email addresses of people who engaged with the department, the DfE confirmed.
The incident affected the department’s help desk, which manages requests from local authorities and school leaders, and the Turing Scheme, which oversees UK students studying overseas.
